After birth
Mother an baby generally stay at the hospital for 2-4 days and are cared in the maternity ward. You may also choose to return home a few hours after giving birth and be looked after at home by your midwife.
Who looks after the mother and her newborn baby postnatally at home?
The midwife.
After you have been discharged from the hosputal, your midwife will visit you in your home. The home visits are based on your needs: at first, the midwife normally comes every day; after that, she visits as you and your situation require. The costs of home visits in the first 8 weeks after birth (within reasonable limits) are included in the basic health insurance.
A medical check-up should take place 6 weeks after the birth. Schedule a visit with the caregiver who looked after you during pregnancy (midwife or gynecologist).
For breastfeeding advice you can consult a midwife or a lactation consultant. The baby health insurance covers 3 breastfeeding consultations. Mother, Father/Parent Counselling also answer questions on breastfeeding.
*Footnote: Home visits can also be made by a qualified perinatal nurse. Perinatal nurses do not have the same medical insurance contracts as midwives. In accordance with cantonal regulations, they can charge patients a separate fee.
Who cares for the newborn baby?
The pediatrician or the family doctor.
Medical care is provided by a pediatrician or the family doctor. the first consultation generally takes place 2-4 weeks after birth.
Mother, Father/Parent Counsellings
Mother, Father/Parent Counselors help with questions about infant and nutrition. They support parents until the child is 5 vears old.
