Partner clinics

Familystart works closely with two maternity clinics in Basel: the Women’s Health Clinic University Hospital Basel, and Bethesda Hospital. Our collaboration is governed by a contract and is well established.

These two clinics offer their clients the following services provided by Familystart:

  • Guaranteed referral to a midwife for home visits after leaving the hospital.
Our care guarantee applies to Basel-Stadt, Baselland and neighboring municipalities in Aargau and Solothurn.
If you live in a different area, we will do our best to help you find a midwife.

Women’s Clinic, University Hospital Basel

The University Hospital Basel is a leading medical center in Switzerland that operates at a high, internationally recognized standard.

The delivery and maternity wards of the Women’s Clinic have access around the clock to a competent team of midwives, obstetricians, anesthesiologists, neonatologists from the University Children’s Hospital as well as other specialists if needed. Trained at the cutting edge of research and technology, the team attends to the well-being and safety of the prospective family – from pregnancy to birth and the postnatal period.

For the challenging time following the birth, the team works closely with Familystart. Clients of the University Hospital Basel can use our services for free.

The University Hospital was closely involved in establishing Familystart. Esther Sackmann Rageth, former Head of Nursing at the University Hospital’s specialized clinics, explains the reasons for this commitment: “It enables us to ensure continuity of care for families with newborn babies in and around Basel. The home visits have a preventive effect. They offer reassurance and prevent emergency consultations and readmissions to the hospital.”

Bethesda Hospital

Bethesda Hospital is a private hospital in Basel and belongs to “The Swiss Leading Hospitals”. In our maternity clinic, we offer comprehensive expertise, safety, the highest level of comfort and extensive services in a welcoming atmosphere. When giving birth, you will be cared for by the in-house team of doctors or by your affiliated doctor and one of our hospital midwives. You can also choose to give birth with the support of an affiliated midwife. Our delivery unit is open to all insurance classes regardless of the canton of residence.

Since May 2019, we have been offering the option of a fully midwife-led birth in our “Haus der Geburt Bethesda”.

Various services before and after birth, such as birth preparation classes, prenatal diagnostic ultrasound, acupuncture, lactation consultation, postpartum exercise classes etc. complete our offer. The team of the maternity ward makes sure the future parents are well informed and provides services specifically designed to help them prepare for the birth. When the baby is here, nurses, midwives and lactation consultants give the mother personalized support and advise her on the care of her baby.

For the first few weeks at home, clients of Bethesda Hospital can use the Familystart services free of charge. “Familystart reassures women that they will be well cared for at home and that they can talk to someone directly in an emergency,” says Ute Richter, head of the family ward at Bethesda Hospital.

Bethesda Hospital also offers outpatient lactation consultations that women can book regardless of where they gave birth. Regular breastfeeding meet-ups, led by an experienced lactation consultant, make room for questions and offer an opportunity to talk and share experiences. They take place once a month and kick off with input from the lactation consultant on a chosen topic.
